3 Important Things

Right to refuse or end membership

Spectator Guidelines

Most martial arts schools do not permit parents to spectate.

Our parents are allowed to spectate if they wish (it is not required); but there are guidelines that must be followed as we care deeply about the quality of our classes. Any noise level is a detriment to the teacher, the teaching, the students, and the success of everyone involved.

All spectators must remain quiet as all noise travels and amplifies in our facility.

Parents are not permitted to coach, instruct, cheer on or lecture their children during class.

Please do not bring young children, infants, or family members who are prone to make noise to spectate.

No telephone calls or long conversations during class, especially during instruction.

Those who frequently violate these guidelines may be no longer permitted to spectate during class.

If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to John after class, not an assistant coach.

If a child causes constant disruption during class, and/or tries to bully, intimidate, or abuse another child, we will try our best to remedy these behavioral issues, but if it is severe, or appears to be out of our control and/or unresolvable, we reserve the right to end our professional relationship and refund the unused portion of the membership. Uniform cost will not be refunded.

Sick, skin conditions, footwear etc.

Please do not bring your child to class if they are sick.

If your child has an infectious skin condition, contact John immediately; while we have never had staph infection at our school, it can be deadly in even healthy young adults, so it is taken seriously.

Please make yourself familiar with infectious skin conditions in the posters on the wall of the school so you know what to look for.

There are no bare feet anywhere in our facility except the training floor for those actively participating in class. Everyone in the facility must wear sandals or socks, unless they are on actively participating in the class.

Kids must arrive with socks on, not bare feet, as those with bare feet will walk on the entry mats and defeat the purpose of having footwear rules.

Introduction

Your child will be joining one of the fastest-growing sports and self-defense systems in the world: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's one of the few martial arts that lets a smaller, weaker child defend themselves against a much larger attacker without needing to sustain or inflict serious harm.

We know parents choose martial arts for their kids for many reasons beyond self-defense, and our goal is to provide a genuine, supportive environment where children can build character that carries over into every part of their lives — especially at home and at school.

Jiu-Jitsu doesn't involve punching or kicking, but like any martial art, it can be misused if taught carelessly. That's why we hold off on submission holds and techniques that could injure another child until students reach an advanced level, after years of training with us.

Because of how we structure our program, we've never had a child seriously injured, nor have we had a student go on to bully others using what they've learned here. We take our role in your child's development seriously.

Our classes are designed to be fun, especially for younger kids. We've found that building self-esteem and a strong relationship with each child — through games and bonding activities — is what makes them genuinely love coming to Jiu-Jitsu. Once that connection is in place, the rest follows naturally.

Progress looks different for every child. Some show change almost immediately; others take a few weeks or months. Over the years, we've worked with hundreds of kids and seen real, lasting success with 95% of the students who walk through our doors.

We're excited to work with your family and help build a brighter future for our community.

Our Promise

To keep all our students safe and look after their best interests.

To be available and open to feedback, questions, and support without judgement.

To do our absolute best to provide a quality experience to all of our members.

Student Guidelines

All uniforms need to be washed and dried before class

Students cannot be bare chested under their uniforms.

Heavy, excessive or cumbersome clothes are not permitted underneath uniforms. (Sweaters, dresses, button up shirts, jeans, sweat pants etc. )

All nails must be trimmed so there is no edge on them.

All long hair must be tied back.

No jewelry or other wearables during training.

No food, gum or sugary drinks near the mats.

Students must practice good hygiene.

Sparring Rules

  • No grabbing fingers

  • No pushing onto the throat or face or pulling the head down excessively

  • No slamming another child down onto their head

  • No push kicking another student to get them off of them

  • No digging in any part of their body into another students body to get a reaction (i.e. Digging an elbow into a leg or chest)

  • No grabbing onto a body part and twist it.

Submissions

We follow the IBJJF guidelines for which submissions are allowed in training, however most of our younger/new students are not taught submissions and not permitted to use submissions in training.

  • Any experienced/older child who ends up hurting a teammate with a submission during sparring will not be permitted to use them again.

  • Any child who hurts a child at school, even a bully who attacks them, or teaches their friends submissions outside of the school will not be permitted to use them again.

Parents are not permitted to teach their child any submissions or takedowns without discussing it with John first as what you are teaching may be illegal for kids Jiu Jitsu and/or compromise the safety of the other students.

Class Information

Cancelled Classes

In the rare event that the majority of our coaches are sick, we reserve the right to cancel class. We do everything possible to avoid this, including keeping a large team of backup coaches on call. You will be notified via e-mail and it will be posted on our social media (facebook, instagram)

Start Times

Our doors open 15 minutes before class starts, and class begins exactly on time, every day.

Please bring your child in about 10 minutes early.

Kids who arrive late routinely miss important information which affects their success for the rest of that class.

Class will also end exactly on time.

To help things run smoothly, we ask that parents avoid crowding the entrance, doorway, and waiting area.

If your child is sick or can't make it to class for any reason, no need to notify us — we understand, and we'll see them next time.

Arriving late for first/trial class

New students should arrive 10 minutes early so they can settle in and allow us to get to know them a bit before class.
If your happen to arrive late, you are welcome to observe class, but your child will not be permitted to participate.

Equipment

Please make sure your child brings their own water bottle, labeled with their name, to the gym — we'll remind them to take it home with them.
We also ask that you write your child's name on their belt and inside their Gi top, if possible.

For No Gi training student’s must wear a tight shirt with sleeves, and shorts with no pockets.
We highly recommend spats/leggings, but they are not required.

Membership Fees and Renewals

For those who pre-pay months in advance, we send a reminder email two weeks before your membership fee is due, so you can let us know if you'd like to continue.
If your child is moving on to another activity, no hard feelings — please just let us know so we can open your spot to another student.

As of July 2026, we no longer accept e-transfers for month to month payment.

We require a credit card on file to bill monthly, or a minimum of 3 months may be pre-paid via e-transfer.

Late Fee

If payment is more than 10 days late without reaching out, a $25 late fee will apply.

Refunds

Pre-paid Memberships of 3, 6, 12 months or promotional memberships (“15% off if entire season is purchased) are non-refundable after 2 weeks of purchase.

Tournaments

Children under age 7 are generally not permitted to enter tournaments, though we evaluate exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Kids who have already competed before turning 7 are grandfathered in and may continue competing if they wish.

Kids Belt Promotions

Kids receive promotions (degrees, new belts) based on several layers of criteria.

  1. Being a good team mate, student and friend.

  2. Ability to apply what we have learned at class during live sparring.

  3. Ability to follow direction, exhibit emotional control, and work independently.

  4. Quality of the conduct of themselves at home and at school.

  5. Attendance and efficient use of their time while at class.

4 white, red, and yellow degrees (stripes) are required before the next belt, however students who exceed these expectations receive belts/degrees much faster

Belt promotions occur every 2-4 months.

Student of the month belts

Starting June 2026, 2 students from each kids class (Ages 4-13) may be awarded one of two “student of the month” belts to wear in place of their regular belt.

At the end of the month, they return the belt, and we may award it to someone else.

Red/Black: Students who exhibit perseverance, mental toughness, emotional control and ability to handle challenge and difficulties in their training with poise.

Black/white: Students who demonstrate exceptional ability to retain and use techniques we have taught in class over the past 4-6 weeks.

These belts are meant to encourage students to make more of their time in class.
